The Chariot Jubilee and the Music of Moses Hogan St Mary’s Catholic Church
684 South Third St
Columbus, OH 43206

Join us for a festive afternoon of Spirituals arranged by Moses Hogan and more! Featuring guest soloists Franklin Brewer and Karolyn Lee Gholston and the seminal work of Nathaniel Dett.
Nathaniel Dett’s “The Chariot Jubilee” is a major work for choir and a tenor soloist. We welcome back Franklin Brewer as our soloist for this underperformed work, again with the message of hope and a desire for a better life. A fantasia based on “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, this piece had its premiere in 1921.
Moses Hogan (1957-2003) was a prolific arranger of Negro Spirituals, composing more than 100 pieces in his too short life. On this concert: My God is So High, We Shall Walk Through the Valley in Peace, Wade in the Water, Ride on King Jesus, I’m Gonna Sing til the Spirit Moves in my Heart, This Little Light of Mine, Surely He Died on Calvary, Hold On, and Who Built the Ark?
Also on the concert: Especially Do I Believe in the Negro Race (Margaret Bonds/Langston Hughes), His Eye Is on the Sparrow (Stacey V. Gibbs), and I Want Jesus to Walk with Me (Rollo Dilworth).
This concert is part of the St Mary’s Concert Series, Mark Voris, Artistic Director
